QLD Termite & Timber Pest Guide

Queensland termite guide covering inspections, warning signs, termite barriers, NCC requirements, QBCC advice, treatment options and termite prevention for homeowners.

Termite Management System Design (Australia)

  • The termite management system should be designed in accordance with Australian Standard AS 3660.1 – Termite Management: New Building Work, which is referenced by the National Construction Code (NCC). The purpose is not to make a building termite-proof, but to deter concealed termite entry and allow termite activity to be detected before significant damage occurs.
  • Common System Types Key Design Principles
  • Continuous Protection The system must be continuous around the building perimeter. All slab penetrations, construction joints, and service entries require protection. No gaps should allow concealed termite access. Inspection Zone A visible inspection zone must be maintained around the building perimeter. Landscaping, paving, garden beds, render, or cladding should not bridge the system. Termite activity should be visible before termites reach structural timber. Identify High-Risk Areas Service penetrations. Expansion joints. Cold joints in slabs. Retaining walls attached to buildings. Decks, patios, stairs and ramps. Landscaping that contacts the building.
